Default Chunk missing out of transmission... cheap fix?

My girlfriend has a 95 Integra LS and she (along with 10 other people) hit a wheel that was sitting on the freeway. It crushed her exhaust, cracked the oil pan, and took a chunk out of the transmission at the bellhousing. I've replaced the oil pan and exhaust and the car is now driveable, but I still have a big chunk missing out of the bellhousing. It's actually a hole and I can fit my pinky finger in there. Here's a pic:

I'm thinking about filling the hole with JB Weld, because I'm looking at a minimum of $850 to replace the trans (I don't have the time to do the labor myself). A ton of people swear by JB Weld and several of my friends say it'll work great for this application. Since there is no fluid in the bellhousing, there's no leak, but I'm concerned with dirt/water/etc getting in the hole and the structural integrity of the trans. Would you try JB Weld or replace the trans?

Thanks from a Ford guy (hold your comments) forced to work on his girlfriend's Honda!

i am sure jb weld wouldn't hurt try take off the dust metal shield first no what your lookin at and how much of this compound to put on cause behind that black shield is your automatic flywheel this thing rotates so u don't want any glue on it.....if it gets stuck simply means u can't start ya car.....that would suk.....so make sure u take that shield off and apply with caution

if i were u get some metal tape tape both side so basically u can mold the chunk that is missing.......u tape the inside to match the curves and the outside to amtch it too then fill it up with jb weld.......

after your done with this post up how well it holds just curious........

I have the bell housing case of the tranny for sale if you end up replacing it.

BTW this is a manual 5-speed, not an automatic.

94ls, I didn't realize the bellhousing was a separate part. How much would you want for it?

yeah the tranny case separates at the bell housing part, there are 2 pieces to the case. I would take 100 shipped for it, it will cost about 30 to ship I would estimate.

I'd buy 94lsboost's replacement bell housing for sure! JB Weld does not belong on essential drivetrain components!

Well the bellhousing is not an essential part of the drivetrain. It's really just the "casing." Nonetheless, I'd like to do this rather than JB Weld, and it'd be much cheaper than a replacement trans I bet.

yep, I would reccommend putting your bearing in it because the case has been rained in, but it would be much cheaper. Just let me know.

Hey 94lsboost, I got the car in the air and inspected the trans and all the damage is in the bellhousing case, so now I want to buy yours. $100 shipped, right? I need it ASAP, so maybe a bit more to ship it faster?

I can do Paypal or money order. Either post here or email me at LTDScott at *** dot net to gimme some more details. Thanks!

If you race and your pressure plate, (like mine) shatters or has a piece fly off at high RPM you could be in serious trouble.

At the risk of getting flamed, I'd say if it's not a "wet" hole, don't worry about it. My LS conversion in my Rex doesn't have that sheetmetal cover, couldn't find one.

Isnt that just the flywheel cover? THats what it looks like to me. [edit] Oh I see it, if it didnt accualy break open the tranny then I would say its ok. You could probably take it to a exhaust shop and have it welded over or just JB weld it.[/edit]

The hole is actually in the bell housing case, not just the plate...

And some sort of cooling or strengthening fin is broken too...

Personally, I'd probably be happy doing a ghetto fix with JB Weld, but it's my girlfriend's car and she wants me to fix it properly. I have no problem with that, so I just want to do it as cheaply as possible. 94lsboost, you'll have Paypal money in a few mins.

Hey 94lsboost, I can't use instant messaging since I'm a trial user. You should have gotten Paypal money yesterday.
