okay i got the lower ball joint nut loose and also took off the axle nut. so basically i have the axle just hanging. i took off the old cv boot by cutting with a razor, but i am stumped on how to put the new boot on and also how would i pack on the new grease? is there any way to disassemble the cv joint? need help almost done...

The boot should be held on by 2 clamps. If you've never replaced a cv boot before or don't have a manual, I suggest you don't bother just replacing the boot. There are special clamp tools and if you don't reassemble the joint to spec, you'll ruin the shaft. You're better off buying a rebuilt axle with a lifetime warranty.

x2. I NEVER replace boots. When people tell me their boots are torn, I tell them wait till the axles get worse, then just replace them.

If you still have the OEM joint and it's in good condition, I think it's better to re-grease it yourself than to buy an aftermarket shaft. They are often rebuilt poorly. I've had several occuraces where I've had to replace newly remanufactured shafts b/c the joints were bad and clicking.

On to the OP's question: Ideally, you should remove the shaft from the tranny. Use a large pry bar and pry against the inboard joint cup and the tranny and it should pop out. Put the shaft in a vise and hit the outboard joint with a hammer and it should pop off the shaft. Slide the new boot on, reinstall the joint by hitting the outside tip until the joint goes over the c clamp. Becareful not to mushroom the end or damage the threads. Grease and clamp and reinstall in the car.

The process is a bit tedious, that's why most will replace the entire half shaft so it's up to you.
