Default CEL, P1259: VTEC failure, extensive troubleshooting. HELP!

The car is a 98 GS-R, 93,000 mi. with I/H/E. Stock everything else.

Computer shows code P1259, VTEC System Malfunction.

Code comes back after every ECM reset after taking car into VTEC range (past 5400 RPM's).

The car stays in limp mode (runs rich, poor MPG). But only when the car is pushed (above 6000 RPM's) does the 5,000 RPM rev limiter kick in. So, usually when I drive the car around the CEL stays on and I can drive the car past 5400 RPM's with no VTEC engagement and no rev limiter.

Every step of the Helm's manual troubleshooting has been followed except ECM replacement.

The following things have been checked as OK:

- Wiring
- Oil level
- Oil pressure

The VTEC solenoid/spool-valve assembly has also been replaced with a new unit.

The 90,000 mile maintenance was also done.

I am working on finding an ECM to swap in and check if that's the source of the problem.

Solutions/testimonials?

This problem is driving me INSANE.
