Default car wont start...new battery thought it was starter, replaced it but no workie

ok my car had an intermittent starting problem. sometimes it just wouldnt crank over and start. so someone said its my starter and said to hit it to get it to start. so that worked. so i thought my starter was bad, i went a few weeks or so like that everytime it wouldnt start i would hit it. but then it wouldnt start nemore even if i hit it. if i poped the clutch while rolling it would start though. so i decided to buy a starter

btw. here was the symptoms. car wouldnt crank or turn over over at all...with key in the 1st position it had nothing power. key in second position no power again. sometimes though the radio would work and the dome lights would work but they were very dim. and if i turned the lights on the guage cluster light up but dimly but the lights wouldnt turn on. and when i had the battery hooked up to a jump pack and the key in the 2nd position it would just click all the time and the tach would jump around from 0-2k but it still wouldnt turn over, it would just click (from passanger side under glove box)

well neway i got a new starter. put it in what a pain in the ***.
i started it up...it was kinda hard to start....it was turnin over etc. and it started...i drove for like 10 min. let it sit for 3 min or so. and whet to start it up again. it was hard to start. finally it started but shut off right away. so i tried again it started and started to die so i tried to rev it up but that had no effect and it died. then after that it wont turn over at all and has the same problem as b4. wont crank or turn over at all.

im soo pissed right now, does neone know what to do? or what it is

did i get a bad starter? is it something else
btw the starter is from a junkyard but they said they test them b4 they sell em

i would go with the junkyard starter is no good. cause as long as you hear a click when you go to start then the starter should be getting power. It is hard to tell though. The best thing to do is put a test light or a meter on the positive side of the starter and see if it is getting power if so then it is the starter.

We can get the starter tested at your local auto-part store. Almost all major auto part chain have free eletrical testing, which includes the starter.

Lots of other possibilities, but you gotta rip something out to check em out.

Flaky ignition switch? Get in to the back of it, pull the wires & check it out with a DMM.

Big power cables at the battery or starter or engine/transmission ground? If they're loose or corroded, take 'em off, clean & tighten them. Both ends. Not just the clamps on the battery, but where the wire itself is held into the clamp. Don't forget the big engine ground.

how could it be a starter problem when he says hes getting no power when he turns his ignition to I and II and the lights are dim. wouldnt that be a charging system problem or am i missing something here. lol. start by checking with your battery cables. see if theyre corroded and hooked up to the battery good enough. if its ok, try borrowing a battery from a friend and try it in your car. if it still doesnt start, check alternator belt and other external parts of the alternator. and then just try repairing or replacing the alternator(just to check, ask a friend to borrow his, hehe). i have a feeling its an alternator problem, if not battery. one or the other doesnt seem to be charging as much as needed.

well i just replaced the batter about a month ago, i dont think it would be the battery. the cables are fine and not corroded. And the belt is good.

i havent had time to take the alternater off but hopefully maybe this weekend i will.

Do this quick test to find out if ignition switch is your problem .
Start the car and keep light pressure on the key be careful and not start the car over again when engine's running.

How many miles on the car ?

well get a test light and turn the key probing the diffrent prongs or wires in the realy, if when you turn the key you have power at one end of the relay and not the other then its bad. just by what you said that would make me want to change it. ign switches usually dont go out all that much.
