Sunday, April 5th: I was driving back from lunch and the car just cuts off by itself while coasting to a stop light. I coasted to a stop, and was able to quickly restart the car. This happened twice that day.

Monday, April 6th: Car cut off again while driving at very low speeds and low throttle. Tried starting for ten minutes with no luck. Wouldn't immediately restart, so I walked to an ATM to get cash so I could call a two truck guy. When I get back 20 minutes later, the car fires right back up. I am able to drive 5-6 blocks trying to get home, but the car cuts off again. Let it sit again, and it eventually cut back on. Drove 5-6 more blocks and then it cut off just before my house.

Thursday, April 9th: Started to drive the car to my work (where all of my tools are) with my girlfriend following me. Got about a mile down the road (city roads) and it cuts off again. Tried to restart it for ten minutes with no luck. Went to get my dad's truck and a friends trailer to tow the car to work. Got back to the car 1.000-1.500 hours later, expecting it to fire right back up. However, no luck. After 2.000 hours of pushing the car and pulling it with ratcheting tow straps, the car got on the trailer, and I got it to work about 9:30p last night.

I'm going to start diag.ing the car tomorrow afternoon wants the work load at my shop dies down.

Possible Problems:

1.) My first guess was fuel related. However, the fact that the car cuts off but will restart has me looking elsewhere; when a fuel pump goes bad, it is usually completely unfunctional.

I looked for a schrader valve on the fuel rail to check pressure, but was unable to find one. How do I otherwise check this pump is functioning?

2.) I first noticed last night that I have a ground strap that on one side is connected to the radiator support just above the driver's side headlight, but is connected to nothing at the other end. There is a hole for a bolt on the part of the valve cover that covers the cam gears, with nothing attached to it and no screw. I tried touching that ground to every piece of metal it would reach while my girlfriend tried to start the car with no success.

An intermittent (sp?) issue like this does lead me to assume I have an electrical problem (possibly a weak connection somewhere that is at the point that it's ready to give way.

3.) I was having a problem with a jumpy tachometer (when crusing at ~65mph (or any other speed) the needle would erratically twitch between 3,500 and 5,000-5,500 rpm. I was told to clean the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) connection at the transmission. I didn't see this as an immenint problem, so I held out on doing this. Could this be part of my problem?

4.) OR MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING I'VE COMPLETELY LOOKED OVER...

This is where I need you guys' help. I need to fix the sumbich TOMORROW!

Definitely the distributor. I had the exact same symptoms. I would cruise down the freeway and my idle would be jumping all over. Then it just died when I was coming to a light and would not turn back on. The coil in the distributor was fried. Barrow a friends for a day and test it out.
