Default California People, need your assistance.....

Just got pulled over today leaving school, and the cop asked me to pop my hood. Since all I have on the car is my AEM cai and my apex ni exhaust, I did. He proceeded to tell me that the intake is not legal, because the CARB# is just on a sticker. He said it had to be a plate like a vin plate riveted to the part. He didn't make me rev the exhaust, and I did not go over 3k rpm during the 200 feet he followed me and was driving very slow, less than 1/4 throttle the whole way. Well I have to go see the State Ref according to him, and I can't drive the car until it is in compliance. Needless to say, I want to fight it. Have any of you guys dealt with something like this for a part with a carb# on it? Any help/suggestions is appreciated, I'm getting sick of this ****. I want to win one back this time.

thats bullshit. It doesnt matter if its a sticker or a plate, they just look up the CARB number and if it matches you're fine.

From what I have heard, CA cops/chp can call in and check to see if the carb# are real or not.

Hmmmmmmm if you were following up on my post a few weeks ago like 1-2 weeks. Same thing happen to me. I'm in SD also. The pig made me go to state ref too. Pull me over for my exhaust I wasn't even goin at full throttle and low rpm too. He said that he pull me over for the modified exhaust. I'm like okay so just write me my damn fix-it ticket. Dumb excuse.. He didn't do that. He then told me to pop my hood and took a pic of my engine bay. He didn't cite me for my modified exhaust but he cited me for modified emissions. So he sent me to the state ref what a dick!!! My AEM CAI & DC header are fine since they have carb #. I'm more worried about my b&m fpr, fuel gauge, vafc, my Apexi catback N1. My appointment is this next coming Friday 17th. Anyways, I just goin to try and set things to stock like fuel pressure regulator, remove my fuel gauge, set back my timing, etc..... Good luck with yours man. CA pigs are dicks!!! Nothing better to do than pull over imports. I don't think you can fight it since you have a modified exhaust. Anyways, good luck with yours.....

Sounds like you need to call the office that he is located out of and speak with the officer on duty, even drive down there if need be...worse case scenario you need to file a complaint.

As it is obvious that the office doesn't know the laws...he most likely gave you a ticket with a BAR sticker on it, which will require you to go to a CARB ref...spend some $$$ for them to tell you that your car is legal

Thats why I sold my AEM and purchased the Comptech icebox! And I have the JDM 4-1 headers with the top heat shield. You need to look stock!

Exactly it has the sticker on the back saying the ticket can only be signed off by the state ref, meaning I have to pay to get the car smogged when I just had it smogged 2 months ago, just for them to tell me that my car is legal, which I already know. Someone told me that if I go to court, the judge will just tell me to see the state ref, because although the part is Carb exempt, they don't know if the car passes smog with it on there. Since they don't have a db meter, they can't test the exhaust, but will sign it off anyways because only they can sign it off...no officer can, not even CHP. The sticker says that I can't drive the car until the violations are fixed, but I have to drive it, I have finals. I'm getting tired of this crap, I think I'm done buying parts for my car.

yeah, bad thing is
i also have

they were nice, they said, if u do get pulled over a month or 2 or 3 or so after the carb ref test b/c of the same things, then just go to the judge and show them u passed....

also, keep the carb ref certification sticker/paper (wutever they give u) in the car .....it wont stop the cops hassling but hopefully it shud stop them from giving u another carb ref ticket

Lol we all in same boat. Yeah thats the good thing about the state ref inspection after that if another pigs tries to slap you with another state ref bring his asssssss to court with your state ref certificate and it should be dismissed
Man dude how are you goin to fix all that to stock?? Thats goin to cost you unless you do your own work and still have the stock parts Well, at least you guys didn't get your engine bay pic taken. Good luck to all of your inspection mine coming on the 17th...... *sigh*

I got my engine bay pic taken too. Cop was a jackass, I had to try so hard not to kick him in the nuts. I'm lucky I didnt have my nitrous on the car, and I didnt have my new project motor in there. Luckily, my smog from 2 months ago is still valid, so I can use that I think. As for the exhaust, I don't know what I'm gonna do yet. The ref doesnt do anything for exhaust, but they are the only ones who can sign off the ticket. I guess I'm gonna have to pay either way. As of today, I am done buying parts for my car. I'm selling off my stuff that I don't use and am going to put the money towards other things. I'm tired of getting harassed by the cops for doing nothing wrong. I'm going to file a complaint with the police dept. after I get the ticket taken care of...I just wish they would give my money for seeing the ref back to me, since there is nothing illegal about my car. **** bastards. I'm out........

Nope...you can't use that...you need to go to the state BAR shop, people that are actually employed with the State of California...you're going to have to spend your time and $$$ for something that the office didn't know

I still say that you give the on duty officer a call and play all nice with him and ask if you can have someone look at the car and tell you why it wasn't legal, and why you need to go to the CARB ref...

damn that sux.. I've been putting off taking out my intake and putting back the stock air box w/ K&N filter and running piping into the fenderwell... I guess this is incentive enough for me to do it this weekend.. I dont want to have to deal w/ all this crap and although I love my car and modding it up.. theres just so many things that are discouraging nowadays (cops handing out BS tickets, theft, vandalism/haters, etc..)... good luck w/ the state ref and everything guys...

Well I can't really take it to the police to have them look at it and tell my why it's illegal, because I'm not supposed to be driving the car until the violations are fixed....well what they consider to be illegal anyways, even though it isn't. I guess I'm just gonna go see the ref....there goes more money down the drain. I'm done with this ****.......

I am tired of these bullshit tickets. Most pigs are ********. Memorial Day, last year I was even arrested on DUI, when I was not drunk. After spending a day of my life in jail, and paying for an attorney, the charges were dropped. I wanted to ******* kill someone. Then I get a bs ticket late last year for passing a car on the right. Turns out the cop did not know his VC, so I won.

I want to know what you are going to to about the exhaust. On the 29th I got pulled over. I'm in San Diego too. The cop said he pulled me over because he said my exhaust was loud (Apexi N1). I was f*cking driving like 15 mph!!!!!! Anyways he took a pic of my exhaust and made me pop my hood and took a pic of my Injen intake. He gave me two tickets, one for "loud exhaust" and one for modifying an emissions item on the car (intake). I put everything back to stock and saw the state ref (in Escondido) on 05-07-02 (I passed). I asked the ref about the loud exhaust thing and he said he can't do anything about that because they do not measure DB's there, but on both tickets I got it says they can't be signed off by a cop only the state ref can sign it off. I can't go to court yet because the damn court does not have a record of my ticket yet. They said I have to wait 4 freaking weeks!! But I won't be in San Diego in 4 weeks. I am moving out of San Diego!!!!! I wanted to get all of this crap taken care of before I move

Well I got to tell you if AEM claims they are carb legal and you keep getting tickets for it then file a claim against AEM. Tell them you want your money back for all the expenses you went through because they are not carb legal. I'm sure they will send you some paperwork showing they are in fact carb legal and you can use that in court.

The problem is, if I go to court and the judge is a dick and lose, I have to pay over $200, or I could just go see the ref and pay for a smog. I don't know what to do about the exhaust, since the Ref doesnt do anything for that but only they can sign off the ticket....wtf is that ****.
