Burning oil question
My car intermittently puffs a bit of blue smoke. I had a buddy follow me and a high rev he noticed a bit of blue, and i also notice it every once in a while when coming from a stop. I compression tested it and it was 230 straight across. I had a shop do another compression test and a leakdown and compression was 175 straight across with their tester(big difference from mine, but at least they were consistant both times). Leakdown they said was 3% on one cylinder(not sure which one it was) and 1.5% on the rest. This is on an 00 gsr with about 75k miles.
The car has been consuming about a quart every 650 miles. But the valve cover gasket was leaking at that time which was replaced yesterday so i am not sure how much it is actually burning at this time. What could be causing the blue smoke considering compression and leakdown tests were nearly perfect?

could be the valve stem seals in the head. i doubt you'll see a compression drop with the regular compression test with this type of wear, but i'm surprised that the leakdown test didn't yield more. It very well could be your piston rings. Burning oil is fairly common with high-mileage vtec motors, but yours seems a little young to be experiencing this. have you (or the previous owner) really ragged on it in the past?

Re: Burning oil question (Sijray21)
I've only owned the car for a month. The mechanic who did the VC gasket was suprised how clean the engine looked inside when he removed the valve cover. I am not sure what the previous owners driving habits were.
I was just out driving then, and i noticed it smoking while i was stopped, and then it made a puff when i started moving again. It was hard to tell what color the smoke was though, my car has a test pipe and the secondary o2 sensor unhooked so i know it is running rich as well. Also, the car was parked for a year and has only been driven full time since i got it a month ago.

Re: Burning oil question (ac_attak)
I really want to get this fixed, but i dont just want to guess what the problem is. The mechanic suggested it was the valve stem seals, he said they could have hardened where the car sat so long. Is there any more tests that could be done to give me a more definitive answer? I really dont want to take the car to the stealership.
