Burning oil common in Integras? Need help please
I have a 95 GSR with 150k and a DRAG III turbo kit. Has about 6k with the turbo and I use Mobil 10w-30 full synthetic. Anyways Im driving from FL to WA. Right now im in a motel in Missouri. Right when I pulled the red check oil light started flashing. I had about 1/3 qaurt of oil in my trunk so I put it in and the light went away for about 15 min but then came back. Is this a common thing or am I in some big trouble? I need to make it back to WA!
On a side note the MAINT REQD light changed from flashing 5 times to being solid on. This happened about 5 hours before the check oil light came on. I know the flashing is common once you reach a certain mileage so you take it to the dealer and they turn it off is the solid on basically the samething?
Thanks

yeah, the solid is the same thing... It flashes for a while, then it stays turned on. and you dont have to take it to a dealer to get them to turn it off. Turn the keys to the ACC setting(i think) and then press the little button on the button of the dash under the steering wheel. It should be on the right side.
and yes, a lot of tegs burn oil if youre ahrd ont hem.. vtec burns it. Definately get more oil and fill that up... you dont wanna run that low on it.

How many quarts of oil should I put in if the flashing oil LED comes on? I changed the oil about 3k ago but I have been running it kinda hard before I started the trip. Hopefully ill fill it up, pack some extra oil in the trunk, and everything will be alright. Glad to know the MAINT REQD is nothing i figured if there was a real engine problen the check engine light would come on.

if you changed it 3k ago id just do a complete oil change if you could.. if not, then just fill it up and check it with the dipstick to make sure youve got it full.
it does seem to be burning a little bit too much oil, 1/3 qt of oil was gone in 15 minutes, thats kinda bad.

I did scrape a few times along the way but nothing too bad. Hopefully my oil pan isnt busted. I dont think it is. I change it every 3k. Right now its at about 2700 miles. I was going to change it once I got to WA. I didnt hit vtec at all this entire trip. I parked my car out front ill check to see if their is oil leaking tomorrow morning.

just check your oil before you leave the hotel (cold). fill it back up and bring some extra -- looks like you'll need it. You've got 150k and you turbo'd it.
+1 for the burning oil crew (although I think mine is just due to the previous owner's bad gapping)

Re: (ihaveamustang)
Well the motor was rebuilt just before it was turbo'd. Almost everything that could be replaced was replaced sans the valvetrain. Reading some of the archives:
1. burning oil from the valvetrain isnt uncommon
2. mobil 10w-30 synthetic burns quickly in b series
3. b series burning oil every couple thousand miles isnt uncommon
PS: i just reread my post. The check oil light went away. It did come on for a split second when I was at a dead stop but then went away. Maybe this is my excuse to finally upgrade my valvetrain

i dont care what anyone tells you man, no engines should burn oil, and no its not common. There not supposed to. It usually means your head gaskets going bad, or your rings....hate to tell ya the bad news

if you go into vtec a lot it burns oil. anybody will tell you that, its the truth. He already said he ran it hard, so a little oil burning is normal, but from the sounds of it theres more than just a little, so id get it checked out as soon as possible.

Or in most cases, the valve seals. And numbnuts22715 is correct; if you go hit vtec alot, you will burn oil. Theres no way around it.
And to OP, add oil ASAP!!!! Dont run it with out atleast 2-3 quarts in it. I dont think you should have burned up 1/3 qt in 15 minutes. Something is deffinitely not right

Re: (RIP Indian Larry)
I crack up every time I hear someone say that they added a quart or two of oil when their light comes on, but they don't bother to check the dipstick to see how low they were. Then, after they add the oil, they don't check again, then drive it with 2 quarts too much oil because it wasn't low in the first place. lol
Not saying this was you, but you said you saw the light and added oil, but you didn't say how much was on the dipstick when the light came on. What was the level on the dipstick, did it have any oil on it?
Throw some cardboard under the car overnight to check for leaks. You are putting alot of miles on the car, so maybe you have alittle blowby burnoff, but shouldn't be that bad.

Re: (Sam92Teg)
Well I added about half a quart. Drove about 700 miles without a problem. Light comes on again, add another half quart of oil, and now the light is gone again. Checked the dipstick each time to make sure it was at the right level. the block was rebuilt recently so i dont think its anything in that section
this integra will cease to be my daily driver once i get back

is the car smoking? its seems like you are losing it somewhere else. check return and feed lines. check level with dipstick when light comes on again...if its full or at least half i would check pressure sending unit and oil pressure.

Re: (Luchini)
Keep in mind if youre checking the dipstick when the car was just running it wont be accurate. And that light only comes on when pressure is almost nonexistent, meaning oil is WAY low.
First culprit on a turbo car would be the feed line at the block, at the turbo, and the return line coming off the turbo or into the pan. Those 4 spots are the first places to check. Also look for leaks around the pan. A lot of times those oil pan nuts/bolts find a way of backing themselves out over time after a pan removal if not tightened properly in the right sequence.
Also, as you mentioned, ditch that M1 asap. Try running Castrol and that should help a bit with it temporarily as well, if it is a serious burning issue and not a leak.

bad gapping on the plugs can make you burn oil? Im not being sarcastic its a serious question

Re: (georgekobe8)
I don't see how being half a quart low could possibly cause the oil warning light to come on. A half quart loss still keeps the oil between the dots on the dipstick.

Re: (Sam92Teg)
If you oil pick up tube in lose then the you will have to over fill the car to have oil at the pump. Pull the oil pan and look. You need see what is going on this could be the start of a catastrophic failure

Re: (RX3)
Is it possible the sensor is all jacked up? Ill drive down the freeway for 8 hours and when off the onramp it will come on. It only does it right after I get off the freeway to get gas or pull into a motel. Checked the oil level and it is above the dots.
