Default BEST OEM non-VTEC Cams?

Has anyone ever bothered to figure out what the best OEM cams are from Honda for B18a/b and/or B20?

I have to run stock cams in my class. No BC or Crower allowed. Gotta be a Honda Cam. The competition is going to be tough next year. My B20 runs at the same weight as cars running a B16a. And they are allowed CTR/ITR cams. (Bastards.)

Please help.

Not 100% sure, thats a good question. I'd think the b18b cams would be the most agressive due to the couple more hp over the original b18's. But who knows about a B20 cam. I'm interested as well if anyone knows.

Well, B18A, B18B, and B20 were the only DOHC non-VTEC engines using the B-series head, so that's pretty much all you can choose from.

The HP difference from the b18 to the b20 comes from the small bump-up in compression (B20's are 8.8-1 and B18's are 9.4-1, I believe). But the LS motors make peak power at a higher RPM than B20 motors (remember the B20's were designed for a CRV, which is a SUV that needs more low-end torque than top-end HP), so that leads me to believe that LS cams have more lift and a little more duration than the CRV cams. But I really am not sure if they are different or not.

I forgot about the B20Z cams-those might be better than either the LS or the CRV cams as the B20Z has higher comp and might need bigger cams. This is starting to pique my interest, I hope somebody here knows which cams are "bigger".

I’m pretty sure the intake cam is ever so slightly more aggressive than the B18B and the exhaust cam is the same, but the difference in performance is probably impossible to notice.

in my opinion the b20z would be the best option if you can get them if you cant the ls cam is the next best thing. i got an ls in my civic and the torque is insane but if you cant find b20z cams then i would get just the stock b18b cams and if you cant find those send me a pm i got intake and exhaust oem out of my other head

Holy crap I can't believe you guys don't know the differences. All B20's, B20B's, B20Z's, and B18B's have the exact same cams. The only different one was the B18A that only the exhaust cam was different, the intake is still the same as all of the other ones. The B20 cams you have in it already are as good as your gonna get for OEM non-VTEC B-series.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by dsnyder305 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">The HP difference from the b18 to the b20 comes from the small bump-up in compression (B20's are 8.8-1 and B18's are 9.4-1, I believe). You buddy have no clue what you are talking about. USDM B20B's are all 9.2:1 cp, USDM B20Z's are all 9.6:1 cp, JDM B20's(96-98) are either 8.8:1 cp or 9.2:1 cp, whereas the JDM B20's(99-00) are all 9.6:1 cp. All LS's(B18A's and B18B's) are all 9.2:1 cp.

There is no piqueing in interest over anything.

ARE YOU SURE YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE ?
ALL B20B's are 8.8:1 compression as long as they are 98 and older.

Yes, I am sure I know the difference. Here is a photo from the Honda service manual for the USDM B20B and B20Z with the cp:

You sir, on the other hand are a complete idiot and make yourself look like a jackass trying to prove me wrong. ARE YOU SURE YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE'S FOR <U>ALL</U> B20B'S!

http://hybrid.honda-perf.org/tech/b20/b20tech.html
Read it.
And there are only two pistons available for B20's one for the B20B the other for the B20Z. The U.S. never had a 9.2 comp. B20B, the P8R was allegedly a 9.2 because of the P8R and a two layer head gasket, JDM only.

Wow, your stupider than I thought. Your gonna go off of some bullshit website which I can already can tell is wrong because it says the B20B and B20Z have the same valves when they don't, the B20B with the P8R head had 33mm "VTEC" sized valves compared to the B20Z with the P75 head with the 31mm valves. Next there is no JDM B20B, all JDM B20's were just that B20's, there were no B's or Z's. The P8R head came on USDM 97-98 B20B's also not just the JDM's. All the head gaskets are the same. I don't know how you could be so blind as to believe a incorrect website over a page from the actual US Honda CRV service manual clearly stating right in front of you the true facts of the USDM B20's. Yes, in my first post I put that there was a 8.8:1 cp B20 in Japan, but your here trying to tell me that I'm wrong about the USDM ones when Honda themselves from their service manual is telling you that your wrong. I mean how much more do you want so that you try to tell Honda that they are wrong about their own engines.

Wow. This place is worse that the Honda Challenge competitor's forum.

Lighten up guys.

Now, back to the topic of OEM CAMs... A lot of people have been IMing me about regrinding cams or using Crower 403s because no one would know. But those things are not legal. And the guys I race with are my friends. Even if they weren't, how long could I win with a set of cheater cams before a "competition adjustment" was thrown at me? Then I'd HAVE to cheat just to keep up...

Not cool.

I'm asking about OEM cams, 'cause that's what I'm going to use. Honda has made many subtle changes to the non-VTEC B-series over the years. Since it IS legal to run cams from any of them, I'd like to find out what's best.

Good info so far. Looking forward to more, if it exists. Thanks for the help...

That's certainly ironic.

Regardless of what the correct information is, it would not be the first time a factory service manual contained incorrect data or a typographical data. Like any other book, mistakes can be made.

Yes, please do. If you want to have a discussion or debate, let's keep it civil.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know this was a grammar usage forum, I thought it was an automotive tech. forum. Sorry for using stupider because is was quicker than typing more stupid. Did I misuse any punctation marks?<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Padawan &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

Sorry to tell you being as you might drop my percentage or whatever you want, but I did post from the 2000 CRV manual(thats why it shows both model specs). If Honda would have made a mistake I think they would have fixed it back in 97-98 when the info. for only the 9.2:1 cp would have been there instead of leaving it wrong when they redid it and put in the 99-00 specs in.

It's not that I need to lighten up, it's the fact that someone would go and believe a website that some random person/people just compiled together over what Honda wrote from the people who desgined the motor themselves.

I'm aware you posted from the service manual, but as I stated, errors in the service manual are not unheard of, and don't necessarily get corrected in future editions of the manual. I am not stating that this is necessarily the case here, but it cannot be assumed that the service manual is always 100% accurate.

Since the engine is not stock for your car, could you run an LS/VTEC within the rules?

Cams are all the same. But certain non-VTEC heads flow better than others. The PR8 heads flow the best which leads a lot of people to get confused and think the cams in a B20 are more aggressive.

Negative. The B18a had a less aggressive exhaust cam.
