Default battery weak? new battery recommendations?

well two nights ago i start my car and turn on my headlamps... and let it idle for a short while... then i notice that my headlamps are kinda flickering. So i turned off my radio, afraid that my system was drawing too much power.. and then i drove off... and the problem didnt occur while i was driving. Probably cuz the alternator kept feeding it a charge. But last night it did the same thing.

Is this a weak batter? I'm thinking it is because i haven't replaced my battery in all the time i've owned my car and thats 3 years.

If so.. what battery do you guys recommend i get? Note: I have a pretty decent sound system so it has to be strong enough to push it. And how much does that battery cost?

Thanks alot guys.

Ive been looking around for a battery as well. I'm considering svr because I plan on putting in a audio system. Anyone ever use svr batteries?

I have the SVR battery! It works wonders. I believe your problem may lie in the alternator however. The only two downfalls I have seen with the SVR battery is the weight (deep cycle is suppose to be heavy though) and the fact that you have to get longer battery tie downs because it is about .5 inches taller.

I say to SVR!

*EDIT*

I had the SVR battery in my Honda Civic for about a year with no problems drawing about 100+ amps from my stereo system

I think it *might* be your alternator too because the battery is used to power the starter and other accessories you have on while the car is not running.. but after its started it should be the alternator thats powering the electrical system AND charging the battery... maybe at low RPM its not supplying adequate power or something...

does the car crank over fine? or does it crank over slow?

drive to autozone or kragen and have them test (its free) your battery and charging system..

Wait! I did not say it was worn out! Did you replace it with the stock unit? If not the alternator for the Teg was not designed to handle the amperage drawn by a amplifier. The stock rating is somewhere like 100-120 amps. I am saying that you may have to replace the stock alternator with a high-output alternator or rewind the stock alternator to get a higher output. The battery is like a bandage for your car system just like a capasitor. Either way the SVR battery would not be a bad investment unless you are concerned about the weight! Also you can play your system longer with the car turned off and you can wear the battery down to nothing and it will get a full recharge once you start it up again.

Hope this helps. If not I can try to explain further

thanks for the reply.. hmm.. so does that mean i need to pay for a new alternator that will push out more power? damn.. either way that means i have to shell out some serious dough. ****.. i'm so broke as it is. As for the battery that sounds like a good idea.. i need to invest in a new battery anyway as a measure of preventative maintenace since i've had mine for a hella long time. So where and how much do you think such an alternator will cost?? how come i've never heard of anyone else having this problem..hm.. damn i'm feelin crappy rite now.

Your battery doesn't power your system while your car is running.

Stock alternators are only 80amps. What amps are you running? Whats their max amprege draw.

Since you have a system you prolly have warn out your alternator.

You sould get a high output alternator, 130amp or 150amp, bepending on your amprege draw.

check out ebay, there is a guy named alterstar, has 150amp integra alts for $229, comes with 2 year warranty.

if you want to check ur alternator then just buy a voltage meter and hook it up to ur battery terminals while the car is running. if it is 14 volts or more than ur alternator is good. if its under 14 volts than most likely its ur battery. then shut off the car and test the battery it should be around 12.7 volts. no less than 11.7

you can pick a multimeter up at Radio Shack for pretty cheap I think... didn't you have to take the Physics 4 series and CS 120 series? I could've sworn they make you use a voltmeter or oscilliscope or something like that in those labs If all else fails, and you can't find a multimeter for cheap, lemme know and I'll bring one over next time I'm in R.

According to Consumer Reports, this is the number one battery that should fit (Group Size 35). It is the only battery in the sample selection of ten to be rated with a Very Good Score. (CR October 2002)

Diehard WeatherHandler (South) 30335
$60
(Good Life Test rating)
480 Cold Cranking Amps (mfr.) (With an Excellent Rating)
18/72 (mo. warranty)
(Good Researve capacity rating)

I had an SVR go out miserably recently. Had it for almost a year, and it wouldn't hold charge anymore. Got a replacement unit, and this new one is working fine.

I do have a fresh SVR spare for sale if you are interested, tho.
