Default Bad Wheel Bearing

The front wheel bearings on my car have gone bad. I went to the dealer today to get an estimate on how much it would cost to get them replaced. They quoted me $900, which includes 2 new front wheel bearings, 2 hubs and labor. I left because there is no way I am going to pay that much. Here is my question: is it required to get new hubs as well when you replace the wheel bearings? I remember someone mentioned that the bearings can be pressed out with a hydraulic press and you can just reuse the old hubs. What's a reasonable price to pay for labor just to install the wheel bearings?

It's funny you should post this, cause I just noticed a humming sound coming from my right front at 32K in my 00 GS-R. I'm thinking it's got to be wheel bearing, maybe CV.

To answer your question, it depends on what kind of bearings your car uses. Some cars use a 1-piece, lifetime-assembled wheel bearing that bolts on to the suspension knuckle, and then the brakes and wheel get bolted to it. So if your car has these, then no, you can't rescue any parts. But the labor to fix this should be cheap! 4 bolts and the new bearing is on.

If the bearings are the old-style repackable bearings, then yes, in some cases you can rescue components. But generally in the case of failure, you don't want to recycle, as damaged bearings throw lots of metal and heat around and damage just about everything else. These are also more labor-intensive, but I can't imagine terribly so.

Find out from the parts dept. what exactly defines a "bearing" and "hub" for your car, and ask how many hours of labor they are quoting.

I just recently did this. buy the wheel bearings for your car cause u will need new ones. Should be around 100-150 depends maybe on your hookup for the parts. Then if you are a doit yourselfer then remove axle nuts, remove wheels, calipers, rotors, and then remove the whole knuckle assembly from the upper and lower suspension arms. Once you have the knuckle out take it to machine shop and have em press out the old ones and press in the new ones and presto. Installation is pretty much reverse of installation. Also becareful not to ruin your balljoints when taking the knuckle out otherwise you might have to buy new balljoints. When I did it I wasn't worried about them because they were getting replaced anyways. good luck

yep, no repackable wheel bearings, you have to get the old bearings pressed out and the new ones pressed in. as per the post above mine..

I had one wheel bearing replaced when I bought my ride...and I don't believe I needed the hub replaced. Have you checked a Honda-certified mechanic who doesn't work for the dealer? The dealer here is customer-friendly, but service is expensive. I only go there to buy small parts, for real work (like the suspension stuff I just had done) I go to a regular shop with a Honda-certified mechanic.

just had my wheel bearings(rear left) replaced too about a month ago. annoying humming sound is really irritating! anyways, i paid 150 for the part (new from dealer) and maybe about 100 for labor. labor could be less in your case as i had to service my brakes too. so tell the dealer who quoted you that $900 to SUCK IT!!! ehehehe
