Default b18a1 to b18b1 less power

i recently swaped my 91 b18a1 that was smokeing really bad out for a 97 b18b1 and converted it to obd0 and my b18a1 was faster. i think i must have a problem some where because the old motor smoked really bad and had some problems and the b18b1 has more horse power and was rebuilt 40,000 miles ago anyone know what could be wrong? also this is in an 88 civic hatch.

hmmmm im thinking maybe cuz since u change its from an OBD 2 ecu to a OBD that alot of sensor downgrade so it would have all the sensor it need to run B18B1 to it top performence like a B18A1 cuz that engine did run of an OBD or OBD1 setup unlike like the B18B1 that only run on OBD1 and OBD2 setup

i only have 3 sensors that didnt plug in the one on top of the intake manifold one on the back of the block and the crank angle sensor and i dont think any of those would effect performance

yeah they all play there part but the specially the one on top of your intake manifold that should be your map sensor that tell your ecu how much air and at speed its coming in. and that play a big roll in the performance of your car. cuz without it, it cant calu the AIR/ FUEL RATIO its should be so its going to run at a default so even when your smashing it. its going to run like ****.. cause it doesnt know how much air it getting...

My buddy bought a DA a little bit ago from this conservative lady. It has like 180k on the stock b18a. This guy smokes everyone! And its all stock. Now I've heard that motors that are that old but still run fine run stronger and faster....well that's because wen u get a motor running good with that high mileage, the rods tend to be stretched a little and it gives it a natural stroke to the motor and creatin more power. Now the sensors, I would figure out how to plug em in and get a obd2 ecu for that motor instead of running obd0

or just run the motor the way it should be run, and run it obd2. Just get the conversion harness from rywire.

Wow..

OP, the motors are the same thing minus some Slight difference in cams/IM.

If you swap what's different(sensor/part wise) from the obd motor to the obd2 motor,
It will be just like the same exact motor, there really isn't that much different between them.

But with the power problem, could be just a "slow" motor, have you checked the compression?

maybe carbon build up in your old motor bumped compression up a bit. if it smoked and still felt strong, that leads me to belive your rings were fine but your valve stems seals were leaking oil into the cylinders.
