Default B-series engine rebuild cost?

I've got a 98 Integra GS and I plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off.

Id like to rebuild the factory-spec B-18 back to original factory specs next summer when the car is paid off. Does anyone know how much a rebuild would cost if I do it myself?

I did the 90,000 mile major tune up (by the book) with the help of my dad. It was actually fun for the most part.

I'd like to install new oem piston heads, valves, retainers, etc., on top of the routine belts, water pump, and other stuff. I understand I'll need to take the engine block and heads to the shop for machining work and hot-taking and stuff too.

I'm asking now because I know rebuilds aren't cheap, so I'll probably have to start saving now.

If u plan on rebuilding and doin labor yourself, than i would say your looking at no more than $500. i dont c y u would need new pistons.

pistons and valves take the brunt of the beating during the combustion process. $500 is relatively cheap, but I guess that doesn't factor in the cost of the new piston heads and valve parts.

Its about $10 per valve X 16 plus no more than $200 for pistons, u can probably buy a japanese motor for cheaper but rebuilding motors is hella fun for me.

If I remember correctly when I did mine it was around $600-700. That was without replaceing pistons and with my friend at Honda Garages' employee discount. Thats is you want OEM stuff. I'm sure you can find knockoff stuff for less.

pistons actually should be fine to reuse if you don't overbore. new rings and a hone for sure. new exhaust valves manditory. intakes you can regrind. guides should all be measured, replace any loose ones. valve springs probably should be replaced but you can test them at the machine shop to see if they still spec within range for lb/in. new bearings, honda color codes would the the way to go. check the rods and cylinders for out of round. if any are you have to do a good deal more. an out of round cylinder means overbore and new pistons. out of round rod means resize, new bolts and if the bearing comes in over .0020 having to bring the clearance back within spec. in fact remember that .0020 number on your whole bottom end since that's the upper end of your clearance range. tighter is also not better, running the whole bottom end at .0020 will live longer than .0008 all day.

yea dont replace parts that you dont really need to. if you want 0 miles on the motor, then I suggest to take the block to machine shop and he will make your walls perfect str8 since your walls are wider on the top part then at bottom. Otherwise do a hone(which you can do yourself).
