Default Anyone use 10w-40 oil in the 94-95 GSR tranny?

I know the newer GSR recommends Honda MTF for the tranmission but according to my owner's manual for the 94-95 GSR say use 10w-30 or 10w-40. A lot of people told me to use Honda MTF fluid and that it has charateristic similar to 10w-30. I did a transmission fluid change w/10w-30 oil and I notice the shifting isn't as smooth as before. I bought the car used and the previous owner had no records of tranmission fluid changes.

The shifting is no where as smooth as before. I was thinking about changing it to 10w-40 motor oil for the transmission. Anyone have any experience with 10w-40 in the 94-95 gsr transmission? Any tips are suggestions?

I have Mobil 1 10w-40 in mine and it made a HUGE difference in the shifting--it's much smoother than it was before. I have a GS-R that had its stock MTF in it at 60k when I changed it out, and would highly reccommend it.

Why? Just because it works doesn't mean it's the only/best thing to put in your tranny. Of course Honda is going to tell you to use their stuff in their cars, they make more money that way. I'm using Mobil 1 (as are many others) and it is working better for me than the honda fluid. I have no problem with people sticking to OEM stuff, and I'm not saying it's bad, but don't tell people not to use anything else just because of your opinion.

I guess going to try 10w-40 first, only .99 cents a quart. If that doesn't work, then I'll change to Honda MTF....

Q. Why must I use Honda-brand transmission fluid in my manual transmission?

A. Like the Honda vehicles for which it's formulated, the Genuine Honda manual transmission fluid has undergone an exhaustive and exacting research and development program. When tested against competitors, it demonstrated superior lubricity in an actual Honda 5-speed transmission. And even at -20°C, it clearly performed significantly better than leading competitors.

Genuine Honda manual transmission fluid is designed for smooth engagement of the synchronizers in the transmission; this maximizes smooth gear engagement and prolongs component durability.

Always use Genuine Honda manual transmission fluid. If Honda MTF is not available, you may use an API service SG, SH or SJ grade motor oil with a viscosity of SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 as a temporary replacement.

However, motor oil does not contain the proper additives and continued use may cause stiffer shifting. Replace as soon as convenient.

================================================== ===

Mr. Bite and others may not have experience any problems with Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil in their transmission. And I don't doubt that the Mobil 1 make the transmission shift smoother. But I personally would not recommend using any synthetic motor oil in your transmission. The reason that I say this is because the synthetic motor oil will be to slippery and it will not allow the syncros to work properly. Just my $.02 on the subject.

You only need 2.5ish quarts. It's really not going to break the bank...

I paid $4/qt. for the Honda MTF at the dealer. In comparison I pay $3.50/gt. for Mobil 1 Synthetic at Wal-Mart. How is that $1.50 going to equate out to a worthwhile savings?

[BenSchaeffer]Don't use anything but the Honda MTF. I have seen other **** destroy trannies[/BenSchaeffer]

I think Ben knows what he is talking about . . .

Never ever use synthetic oil in trans missions, use 10w40 plain no synthetic additive. You will be fine. I am replacing rear main seal tomorrow I use 10w40 non synthetic. I'm taking college automotive so I know what to use.

Im sorry but you dont use 10w40 engine oil in a transmissions you will ruin all the bearings. Use manual transmission fluid from amso.

Been using 10-40 oil, [non syn.] in my 94 RS since new, 2nd gear syncros when out, [one month] after a transmission service at Acura where they used Honda MTF, that was 10 years ago, installed a GS-R transmission and used 10-40, still shifts perfectly.

A coincidence, maybe, but I had no problems before the MTF and no problems after switching back to 10-40 in the [used] GS-R transmission.

As mentioned, Acura recommends 10-30/10-40 non syn. oil for the transmission in the owners manual. 94
