"A Keizer elementary school was placed under lockdown for a few hours Tuesday while police searched the area for a man who fled from a stolen vehicle, police said.

The incident began just before 3 p.m. when Keizer police attempted to stop a reported-stolen 1990 Acura Integra near River Road N and Juedes Avenue, Keizer police spokesman Capt. Jeff Kuhns said. The vehicle was reported stolen out of Salem on Monday. Three people inside the Acura ran away. Police detained two of them -- a man and a woman -- shortly after.

Police also found a shotgun reported stolen from Keizer inside the vehicle.

School officials placed the nearby Cummings Elementary school at 613 Cummings Lane N on lockdown after being notified by police, said Salem-Keizer School District spokeswoman Simona Boucek.

Boucek said students who normally walked home or took the bus were kept at the school until parents could pick them up.

Police determined the man they detained, Ronald Lee Hassler, Jr., was not the driver. Hassler was booked into Marion County jail for a probation violation. The woman was released without being charged, Kuhns said.

Police describe the driver as a white man, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, 175 pounds and with light brown hair. He was last seen wearing light blue jeans and a gray, long-sleeved shirt.
