Antenna Replacement - OEM vs Aftermarket?
The antenna on my '94 GS-R Coupe won't retract and my mechanic tells me he needs to replace the entire assembly, including the mast, motor, etc - illustrated as #7 in this diagram:
The only problem is that it lists for $323 and even discounted it's $242.
I see that there are some aftermarket units available.
This one is $54.99 at Autozone:
This one is $40.95 on eBay:
Are those aftermarket ones comparable to the Honda one? Any installation pitfalls or other downsides? The difference in price is huge.
TIA

In, for the same issue, except mine is stuck down.
I would be very weary of using a very cheap power antenna, but have no experience to back that up with.
I've read that the S2K antenna works, but less effectively than the stock one. And there are always the S2k clone antennas out there too...

check ebay for an OE used one, dont ever go for the Aftermarket ones, they dont last nearly as long as OE
and if you get an OE used, buy a new OE mast
and if you get an OE used, buy a new OE mast

When I get the time and money, I will do this:

I don't like the OE antenna when it's fully extended. It looks like a damn military vehicle antenna lol.

can u here the motor antenna motor come on when you turn the radio on, if so then you can probably just replace the mast, thats what I did on mine, if the motor is dead then you need the whole thing, I'm an oem guy, so thats what I would go with, but thats a personal choice

Maybe you could browse the marketplace and see if someone has a working ''used'' unit.. I'm sure you could find a great deal and i'm sure it would be better than the aftermarket ones pictured.
Also check out ''shark antennas''
Goodluck man!

Thanks for all the advice.
I'm a bit reluctant to get a used OEM one, because (as you can see) they often fail eventually, and with a used one, it can happen sooner rather than later.
Keep the comments coming!

i have a bad antenna. motor sounds nasty, no mast to be seen. i unplugged it for now. i think i am going to get one of those mastless styles and wire it up the pillar to above the headliner. there's a thread on here with some pics.
ah, here it is: https://honda-tech.com/forums/acura-integra-6/replacing-stock-antenna-%2A56k-warning%2A-2655628/
i'll be doing this on my DB though, i put a simple kill switch on the antenna in my coupe--i leave it off usually.

I replaced the mast once with an aftermarket unit. It lasted about a year before it broke again. I then installed a Metra hidden antenna on the hatch glass and plugged the stock hole.

Re: Antenna Replacement - OEM vs Aftermarket?
Been rocking the S2K since 2001. Reception of weaker stations is less, but stronger ones are fine. I haven't listened to the radio hardly at all in the past couple of years, though. Mainly MP3 player and now music on my iPhone.
I put together a little DIY mount system and connected some antenna wire underneath and ran it up around the hatch opening, but I don't really know if that helped much.
If you really wanted to you could get the entire S2000 amplified base and mast together (#3 in illustration) for about $105, still much cheaper than the retractable OEM unit.

Re: Antenna Replacement - OEM vs Aftermarket?
did you make a move on this yet, boss? my parts order just came in--i'm about to remove the antenna unit because i have the 25mm rubber plug for the hole now. if you go aftermarket i am curious what you are looking at. also, there are a few used OEM units on ebay for less than 3 digits.

I was nervous about getting a used unit because I don't like buying used parts that can wear out. You never know how long a used unit is going to last.
I ended up putting on an old-fashioned non-power retractable antenna. It was cheap. So it doesn't go up or down unless you're pulling/pushing on it. No big deal.

The metra unit is a good unit and I never have them come back. I have one in my teg after some crack head snapped mine. Also the best thing about it is that its rebuildable. And there is no difference in sound quality or workmanship. And will bolt up almost the same as the stock on.

Re: Antenna Replacement - OEM vs Aftermarket?
well you can either mod the broken one and turn it into a manual retrackable antenna ( it works trust me) or get a new one. i just bought a non retrackable one at kragen for 13 dollars.. its like 3in bigger than an s2000 but other than that they look the same.
