Why put a breather on which will cause it to take in hot air? Instead, leave it stock. The breather hose utilizes the stock intake plenum, therefor taking in cooler air.

hmm, i'm not too sure what it is either. i read a write up once about it, it says that it keeps your throttle body, and intake manifold cleaner due to oil residue. but i have also never seen a difference in performance on a motor that has one, versus one that does not. IMO its just for looks.

Not legal in cali? All hoses must be hooked up according to the hose and emission diagram located under your hood. If you ever get pulled over by a cop and they see that, you'll get sent to the state ref.

ummm, really? breathers aren't air intakes, and the valve cover doesn't suck in air...breathers on the valve cover aren't meant to bring in air, so having cold or hot air around there makes no difference. All they really do is show that you were too lazy to hook it up to your intake (where it should be...it really isn't that hard), or if you're running FI, to a catch can (or similar setup).
Read up on the link that 1Point8DC2 provided...it'll explain things very well.
