Hmm...out of curiosity what brand tstat at did you get? If it's a duralast or other economy part manufacturer it's possible you got a faulty one, best way to test it is to feel the upper and lower rad hoses and make sure they're both warm (an infrared thermometer is even better) or take it out and put it in boiling water to see if it opens, I suggest this only because I have seen tstat issues where revving the car made it cool back off. Also a compression test done at normal operating temp with all the plugs out and tp open...even if it doesn't help solve the issue it's a good thing to know

I understand, and that is a good possibility...especially if the engine itself doesn't seem to be overheating. I've heard of them going straight to being pegged in the red at startup, but as with any electronic device an intermittent issue is very possible. I wish I could be more helpful, but luckily the sensors are cheap enough to give a shot

Sounds like your fan isn't kicking on. Could be your Engine Coolant Temperature Switch, could be a bad fan motor, or maybe you have air in your coolant. This site could help

First you should make sure if they kick on or not on their own.

Ditto the above^^^
Make sure rad fan turns on, should turn on when temp. gauge is at about the 1/2 way point.
Also bleed the coolant system to make sure there is no air in it. 94

You dont need a bleeder valve to bleed the air out of the cooling system. With the car cold, remove the radiator cap, start your engine and let it idle. Turn on your heater full blast and let the car warm up to operating temperature. Add water if needed.
There's probably a more in-depth explanation of how to do it on this site. Run a search for it.

Holding the idle at 1500rpm during bleeding makes the process a little faster, then let idle and bleed...especially if you encounter idle surge from the air in the cooling system
