Default 94 LS automatic won't start. Transmission problem?

I was at a red light and when it turned green I steped on the gas and the car died on me and wouldn't restart. I had it towed home and jumpered the ECU looking for codes. The check engine light did not flash, but the D4 light did. I got 1 quick flash, then 7 quick flashes, then 8 quick flashes. I assume these are 3 seperate error codes 1 7 and 8. Does anyone know what they mean?

There are also transmission codes that can come up. I'm at work right now, but I'll check my Helms when I get home and let you know what they are.

In the meantime, try a search for transmission codes. It's kinda like ABS codes.

Okay, so now I'm home and I have the Helms pages corresponding to the tranny error codes in front of me.

You're lucky I'm bored and I couldn't find anything through searches here.

I typed out the code, as well as how many times the D4 LED will blink. Under that, will be the symptoms. For each code/symptom, there are a list of "possible causes" here in the Helms. There is too much to list, so tell me what comes up and I will list them for you.

P1753 or 1 blink
Lock up clutch does not engage
Lock up clutch does not disengage
Unstable idle speed

P1758 or 2 blinks
Lock up clutch does not engage

P1790 or 3 blinks
Lock up clutch does not engage

P1791 or 4 blinks
Lock up clutch does not engage

P1705 or 5 blinks
Fails to shift other than 2nd-4th gears
Lock up clutch does not engage

P1706 or 6 blinks
Fails to shift other than 2nd-4th gears
Lock up clutch does not engage
Lock up clutch does not engage and disengages immediately

P0753 or 7 blinks
Fails to shift (between 1st-4th, 2nd-4th, or 2nd-3rd gear only)
Fails to shift (stuck in 4th gear)

P0758 or 8 blinks
Fails to shift (stuck in 1st or 4th gears)

P0720 or 9 blinks
Lock up clutch does not engage

P1792 or 10 blinks
Lock up clutch does not engage

P0725 or 11 blinks
Lock up clutch does not engage

P1794 or 13 blinks
No specific symptom appears

P1786 or 14 blinks
Transmission jerks hard when shifting

P0715 or 15 blinks
Transmission jerks hard when shifting

P0740
Lock up clutch does not engage
Lock up clutch does not disengage
Unstable idle speed

P0730
Fails to shift (between 1st-2nd, 2nd-4th, or 2nd-3rd gears only)
Fails to shift (stuck in 1st or 4th gears)

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by d0ug &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I got 1 quick flash, then 7 quick flashes, then 8 quick flashes. I assume these are 3 seperate error codes 1 7 and 8. Does anyone know what they mean?</TD></TR></TABLE>

If you are reading them correctly....here is what the Helms says:
"Codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks. Codes 10 and above are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. One long blinks equals 10 short blinks. Add the long and short blinks together to determine the code."
For example:
One short blink......long pause......one short blink = code 1 or P1753
Two short blinks......long pause......two short blinks = code 2 or P1758
Long blink, five short blinks.......long pause.......long blink, 5 short blinks = code 15 or P0715

If yours are indeed codes 1, 7, and 8....here is what they are:
Possible cause for code 1/P1753
Disconnected lock up control solenoid valve A connector
Short or open in lock up control solenoid valve A wire
Faulty lock up control solenoid valve A

Possible cause for code 7/P0753
Disconnected shift control solenoid valve A connector
Short or open in shift control solenoid valve A wire
Faulty shift control solenoid valve A

Possible cause for code 8/P0758
Disconnected shift control solenoid valve B connector
Short or open in shift control solenoid valve B wire
Faulty shift control solenoid valve B

I personally don't really understand any of it, but feel free to ask me to go into the Helms more and maybe I can help out. There are lots of "refer to" pages for each error. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies guys. Does it say anywhere in the manual that this might be the reason I cannot get the car to start up?

Have you done any electrical work, or any modifications recently?

When I did my automatic to 5-speed conversion, I had lots of wiring issues to take care of before I could even start the car. That "shift control solenoid" may be the issue there as it's in pretty much every code that you listed.

Perhaps there's a short in it (it even says that might be the cause). I believe the shift control solenoid is part of the shift lever slider that positions the shifter in park, neutral, reverse, etc. If the wiring on that is shorted out, or something is wrong with that, the car might not start.

For example, if the car thinks it's in Drive, the key won't be able to be taken out. If the car is off already, the car won't be able to be turned on unless it is in Park.

Wasn't there another thread somewhere where it listed the codes for the automatic......Not sure of what's going on though since I'm not there to actually see it. Also...I had a similar problem, but no codes. My situation turned out to be a bad rotor and dizzy cap Have you checked that out too?
