Default 7,000 RPM In 5th Gear?

Ok my car goes 7,000 RPM in 5th gear and as funny or weird as that sounds it's true. Anybody have any ideas? I know it does go that high because my stock tach. reads it and when I reach 7,000 it starts bouncing because of the rev limiter. Someone said it might be my clutch is slipping so I was driving at about 30 mph. shifted into 5th and gave it some gas and the rpms. rose slowly if my clutch was slipping wouldn't my RPMS. rise quickly?

Thanks for any info.

BTW car is a 98 LS with short ram intake.

I believe the LS has a 6800rpm redline and the rev limiter kicks in at 7k.

yeah, but to reach 7000 in 5th gear would take extra long which is why I'm wondering why it did it....also my 5th gear almost feels like 4th..??? RPMS rise quickly..but like I said if I drive in 3rd and put it in 5th and floor it rpms rise slowly which leads me to believe that its not the clutch...but then what?

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of...just replaced clutch a few months ago (less than a year ago) maybe it went out quickly because I shift fast and just replaced it with one up to OEM quality. I guess this time I can upgrade to a performance one. Thanks for all the replies...

Sounds like clutch, but after you said you replaced it just a year ago, it wore out very quickly, especially if your LS is basically stock. I wonder if you rest your foot on your clutch pedal when you drive? My cousin had a bad habit of doing that and her clutch was gone in about 8months after she replaced it.

No, I like resting it on the foot plate on the left although sometimes I do occasionally leave it on the clutch but it only gets pressed on less than 1/4 inch if that.

also you wont be able to redline 5th gear on a stock motor. or it would take a long time. THe ls tranny is geared really long. 4th gear at 7000rpm is around the neighborhood of 130 miles per hour correct me if i'm wrong. Your clutch seems to be the culprit.

yeah, but I didn't feel like I was going fast. I don't drive to hard I admit I get on the gas a little but not toooo often. I've been up to 130 mph. before when my speedometer was working and trust me this doesn't feel like 130 mph. even. If it was the clutch though wouldn't the rpms rise VERY quickly?

I'm not sure but I think I might have been at 120-130 mph. in 5th. I know about the whole shifting to 5th gear from 30 mph. but someone told me it's an easy test to check if the clutch is slipping. I never do that not even from 2nd to 4th, but I did it this once just to see if my clutch was slipping.

why shouldn't you shift into 5th 30mph? what is wrong with that other than having no power?

I have no idea. Maybe it puts to much strain on the motor since you're in a higher gear and 5th is geared for when you're driving faster. Have no idea on the truth but this is what I think.

whoever said 130 at 7k in 4th gear is wrong. 4th in my LS tops out at 110.

i have always been under the impression that when the rpm drops to low that the motor is actually stressing harder than it would be at say 3500 rpm. in my gsr i usually try to cruise between 3200-3500 rpm.

Just a quick question...you said that you replaced the clutch a year ago? Did you use an alignment tool when you installed it?? Cause I rag the absolute **** out of my clutch, and its only an Exedy stage 1, and its held strong for a little under three years, and 70,000 miles (yes, I drive it a lot), no problems yet. With no alignment tool, or not torquing the pressure plate bolts to spec it could wear out in that amount of time.

So judging by what you have said in your original post and more recent posts... You think that your clutch "slipping" makes you gain speed quicker???

7000 rpm in 5th with a ls tranny and ls sized tires would be 166 mph

I never said this...if you were paying attention I said that in 5th gear I achieved 7000 rpm not 160 mph....I'm wondering WHY I achieved higher RPMS without the GAIN in SPEED.
